Cart

Drawer or page

Theme settings > Cart > Cart type decides what happens when a shopper adds a product:

  • Drawer: a panel slides in from the side, showing the cart. Shoppers can change quantities, remove items and check out from it, or go to the cart page with View cart. The cart icon in the header opens it too.
  • Page: the shopper goes to the cart page.

The cart

Each item shows:

  • its image, title and options
  • its part number and stock label, when Theme settings > Product cards shows them on cards
  • any subscription, and details the shopper entered on the product page
  • the price, with the original price struck through when it's discounted, and the unit price
  • any discounts on that item
  • a quantity selector, a Remove link and the item's total

Quantity changes save on their own, without reloading the page, and the totals update with them. If a quantity isn't allowed, for example because there isn't enough stock, the cart shows Shopify's message under the item.

Below the items: discounts on the whole order, the subtotal, and a note on taxes and shipping. When your prices include tax, the note says so.

On the cart page there's also:

  • The order note, for anything the shopper wants to tell you, while Theme settings > Cart > Show order note is on. It's useful for model numbers or delivery instructions. Notes appear on the order in your admin.
  • Check out, and the accelerated checkout buttons set up in Settings > Payments, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • Payment icons, while the Cart section's Show payment icons is on.

In the drawer, accelerated checkout buttons show while Theme settings > Cart > Show accelerated checkout buttons in the drawer is on.

Discounts

Automatic discounts, and discount codes from a discount link, show in the cart: on the item they apply to, or under the items when they apply to the whole order. Shoppers enter other discount codes at checkout.

Free shipping bar

A bar at the top of the cart tells shoppers how much more to spend for free shipping, then that their order qualifies.

  1. Set Theme settings > Cart > Free shipping threshold to the amount, in your store's currency.
  2. Create the free shipping rate itself in Settings > Shipping and delivery, for orders over the same amount. The bar is a message only; it doesn't change shipping rates.

Other currencies. Shoppers paying in another currency see the amount converted at Shopify's exchange rate, rounded up. If you set a different free shipping amount for a market in your shipping settings, the bar still uses the converted amount, so keep the two in step.

The bar compares the cart's total after discounts, and is hidden while the cart is empty. Set the threshold to 0 to turn it off.
